Action Analysis Class - Jan. 30th, 1936

Five weeks passed after Walt sent his famous memo to Don Graham on Dec. 23, 1935. After a Jan. 6th class on orphan characters, followed by two classes on drapery, it's time to look critically at Ben Sharpsteen's Prod. UM39 - Orphan's Picnic, slated for a Feb. 15, 1936 release. See for yourself - the film is on Treasures DVD "Mickey Mouse in Living Color", Vol.1, Disc 1.

We are in a meeting led by Don Graham, with Lee Moorehouse, Ugo D'Orsi, Jim Algar, Tony Rivera, Al Eugster, Bill Shull, Bernie Wolf, Frank (Thomas?), Archie Robin, Ward Kimball, Don Towsley and Murray Griffen.
70 years ago, they tried to figure out what worked and what didn't, and their films got better and better. Again, a lesson for everyone in the business these days.

I always wondered why the Disney people did not publish all of these notes in a book. A couple are printed at the back of "Illusions of Life" but not enough. Better yet, they should release a dvd with the notes and include the films discussed on the dvd.

Thanks for posting them; I like rereading these every so often to find out some of the bad habits I've gotten into.

If you have any more of these analyses laying around, I'd love to see them. Incredible learning tool here...and well worth emulating.

Well, Warren, these things just don't lay around, I actually spent several thousand bucks to aquire these. Which is why I am being stingy for the moment. They are all originals, as handed out to animators and assistants at the time. Several even signed (see Bob Youngquist's copy of one of these). I really think Disney should do EVERYONE a favour and publish these, themselves, though...

Michael Sporn is right; these are pure gold, very important--thanks for posting them!
AND--many many thanks for acquiring them! God knows where they'd end up...obviously the ones you have went to the right place!
