Studio Talks - Staging (XI)

105106107108109
This last part of the second lecture in the folder "Studio Talks" looks back on the plates we saw in the first of the postings. This whole lecture makes for a rather large document, 67 pages.
I am looking forward to hearing your views in the comments. There must be more to say about this...?

Next up Sam (C.O.) Slyfield, of whom we haven't heard much before. Maybe that is a wrong way to put it, as we ALL have heard material from his hand, as he was the main sound recordist at the Disney studio during its (first) heyday, at least until Lady and the Tramp!

Remember to also check out Mike Sporn's recaps of the layout Training Courses #1 (by Tom Codrick) here and #3 (by Chas. Philippi) here (I posted #2 (by Ken Anderson) here and here and the exercises here), as well as a discussion by Phil Dike about the layout man's relation to the director (Dave Hand) here!

Well, you just sent me back to school in a few ways.

One, this creates a wave of not entirely pleasant nostalgia... y'know, there are those things that one associates with one's youth and all that goes along with... this is one of those things.

Back to school in that, several threads that have been weaving through the last 30 years have just been tied off. That's a shock to the system.

Back, in that , I thought I had learned my craft pretty thoroughly and applied it fairly well in that time. But this just shows me how little was actually done or how good it was. there's been lots of good stuff picked up over the years, lessons from everywhere, .. and as I said some of us had some of this before, but to think that these careworn old typewritten sheets could hold so much STRAIGHTFORWARD knowledge and to see them only now...!

There is so much here, hans, for the budding layout artist, for the battle scarred old vet, for anyone in between.. So much.

The year at sheridan finished on a somewhat sour note for various reasons and I've been contemplating the future there.. but this , this is going to get used. It will be, truly, back to school for all of us.

So thanks again, you 've enriched the soul of an old layout guy here. Hope to meet you someday before we all go to the big studio in the sky...

regards,

scott caple
