Prod. 2004 - Fantasia (IV)  - Seq. 5.1 (Nutcracker Suite: Sugar Plum Fairy)

1314
Directed by Sam Armstrong, assisted by Graham Heid and Lloyd Richardson. Layout by Bruce Bushman and Bob Cormack. This draft dated 4/12/40.

The first thing to come to mind about Graham Heid is that he directed Winken, Blinken and Nod, while Brush Bushman later did a lot of design work for Disneyland...

Animation by George Rowley, Bob Stokes, John Reed, Vernon Witt, Ugo D'Orsi, Les Clarck, Jack Campbell and Cornett Wood.

I admit - I am taking this nice and slow. No need to rush a masterpiece...

  1. Jack Campbell's fairy in Scene 34 looks a bit like Snow White - and he does a supberb job on the fairies, I wonder if he comes back on the fairies? I knew that Clark and Stokes did the fairies because I read that Les Clark handled the characters!

This sequence sort of has repeated casting in the "Roustabouts" sequence in "Dumbo" (i.e. Campbell, D'Orsi, V. Witt, C. Wood, Rowley).

Interesting draft this is beautiful effects scenes!

  2. Seeing as Graham Heid is here, we can pretty much confirm that Jaques Roberts is Jaxon's assistant later on.

Indeed, Steve, this group is not a far cry from the Roustabout animators in Dumbo. I guess we can include more people in Sam Armstrong's inner circle.

I figured Bob Stokes might have worked closer to Art Babbitt around here, but the faries make enough sense, seeing as he was considered a 'Realsitic humanoid' animator of sorts.

  3. I'm guessing Graham Heid is also the "Graham" on the Pinocchio draft who was Wilfred Jackson's assistant on a few sequences.

  4. I see that, while in most shots the sprites are animated by character animators Robert Stokes, Les Clark and Jack Campbell, in a few long shots they seem to have been animated by effects artists.
