Prod. 2062 - Ichabod (VII)  - Seq. 4.2 - Shopping Tour

IchabodIchabodIchabod
Directed by Jack Kinney, layout by Charles Philippi. Animation by Fred Moore (Katrina & boys, but also Ichabod at times), Hal King (Brom Bones and horse) and John Sibley (Ichabod, but also Brom and Katrina on horse).
This FINAL draft dated 5/16/49.

Even though the assignment of animators is generally rather clear cut, scenes 42 and 44 have Fred Moore animating not only the fair Katrina van Tassel, but also Ichabod. He animates Ichabod with clear poses that show his personality and general lankiness. As one of the key moments in the film, I seem to have seen images from these scenes rather often.

On the other hand, John Sibley animates scene 45, with Brom and Katrina riding off - an action scene he would be better at pulling off than the others.

  1. Hmm, this is the first time in this draft so far to find two animators sharing a scene. I'm stumped, did Sibley/Moore share animation - like Fred did the key poses, with Sibley co-animating for Fred, or was it something like Sibley animating Ichabod and Fred animating Katrina?

  2. Certainly the last, Steven. Depending on which character was the most important in the scene, that one would be animated first, then the other animator would take over. I have animated scenes like that myself. At times, though, I would rough out the other character, as well, after which the other animator would use that as his guide.

  3. Another sequence, another new animator handles Ichabod; today it's Epic John!

The difference between Hal King and Milt Kahl is quite obvious, and scenes 35 and 41 are not King styled. Kahl must have done something behind the scenes, but I can't say for sure.
