The question arises - what is new in this patent? It is a different application from the one we saw two postings ago!
Again, it was applied for by Bill Garity on behalf of Walt Disney Productions, filed May 8th, 1939, granted April 28th, 1942. It thus was filed between the patents of the last two postings.
This patent introduces the "photometric device" and its workings, and shows that the background could be mounted at an angle using a mirror. Otherwise, it is just a simplified version of the patent applied for half a year earlier!
Or am I missing something?

One thing I know about patents and applying for them, companies tend to apply for LOTS in the hopes of getting a few...
Hi Matt! My ultimate question is - if one of these similar patents is granted, how can the other be granted too? Is this one hand not knowing what the other does? All items in this application are described in the other, earlier one...
My guess is (and it is just a guess, my patent lawyer diploma is in route...) is that you wouldn't be granted more than one...whichever one was deemed most patentable by the patent office would be granted, and the others denied. But, there's no accounting for government bureaucracy. Also, there is nothing that prevents you from getting a new patent based on updating a previous one, that's why things like paper clips and staples have 3 or 4 patents.
