Prod. 2179 - Jungle Book (VIII) - Seq. 007 - Mowgli Runs Away From Baloo
Animation by Dick Lucas, Walt Stanchfield, Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Hal King and John Ewing.
Basically Ollie having Bagheera explaining the problem to Baloo, then Frank having Baloo tell Mowgli what he does not want to hear, and "other" animators animating in and out of these parts of this sequence (which takes up the entire reel 5).

Hey Hans.
I still got this draft that you gave me some 15 or 20 years ago.
Back then I calculated the footage for Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl and Frank Thomas because they did the most.
If a scene was shared I did not give half the footage but the full amount to both.
Ollie: 238 scenes. 1432 feet and 10 frames.
Milt: 167 scenes. 1154 feet and 12 frames.
Frank: 132 scenes. 980 feet and 10 frames.
That´s about 39 miniuts or half the movie from these 3 masters alone.
Anyway.
I hope you are doing good and thank you for this blog. It is still one of the best.
Bo.
A lot of the scenes towards the end are reused from earlier sequences... with new animators assigned. (What exactly did these other animators *do*? It's not as if the drawings were altered in any way) A very noticeable example is Milt Kahl's "mangy monkeys carried him off!" animation for Baloo, now credited to Walt Stanchfield.
Of course, the bulk of the animation is by Frank 'n' Ollie - Ollie handling the night scenes with Baloo and Bagheera, and Frank handling the morning scenes with Baloo and Mowgli - with a little help from Hal King.
We finally get one piece of Bagheera animation by Frank Thomas, but it's not much - just a rear-view watching Baloo and Mowgli. His "inner turmoil" animation of Baloo uses his recognizable facial expressions and head movements (see, Bashful warning Snow White to be careful, Mickey with the bear in "The Pointer", several scenes in Pinocchio...)
Oh, yeah, and as on the previous sequence, we open on a shot with no animation, but which still has an animator's name on the draft (Dick Lucas in this case).
Thanks for the comments, guys!
Hi Bo - ever in the neighborhood of Dannebrogade 1? Thanks for your summing up - that means in time, for those of you that do not count in feet:
Ollie: 15:52:10 (min:sec:frs),
Milt: 12:49:20 and
Frank: 10:53:18.
Or together: 39:36:00 which is actually a little MORE than half of the rated 78 minutes! Amazing!
