Prod. 2165 - Mary Poppins (VIII)

The rest of Supercal - animated by Ward Kimball.

And this concludes the Mary Poppins draft. The only other animated part in this film is the stop motion by Bill Justice and X. Atencio, and it is not in the draft. As always, as I said before, remember the standard disclaimer: these were working documents, not historical artifacts, so at times they may not be correct. The draft was prepared October 7th, 1963, while the film premiered August 27th of the next year, so a lot could have happened in the mean time. Steven already pointed out that a penguin scene is missing and two live action scenes were cut out. I presume, however, that the draft otherwise is pretty much precise, but keep the comments coming anyway!

Next up, The Jungle Book. Still need to prepare the files, but it will not be long...

A very entertaining sequence, without doubt, as the choreography is wonderful; and I always loved the animation cycle of the Pearlies by Kimball. I always felt Kimball's talent seemed to be lacking. Don't get me wrong, it's great work, but the Pearly mostly appear as a animation cycle, and I feel he doesn't have much opportunity here.

Just for the record; the very last scene which describes the Pearly band washing away from the rain, appears to be omitted from the finished film; though I would certainly love to see how it was animated.

Once again, this has been a great draft so far Hans. It's a shame some of the animator's names were missing; though I suppose it isn't too hard to figure out, as most of the animators on the animated segment have recognisable animation styles.

Looking forward to the Jungle Book draft; I've been rewatching the film: and it looked like to me a movie dominated with animation by Milt, Frank & Ollie..but I should expect some surprises.

Ward's first feature animation since Peter Pan! (what was he doing in all those years, besides "Melody" and "Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom"?)

Well, John, Look at Ward's TV credits: he had been doing the TV programs about space (Man and the Moon, Mars and Beyond). He also wrote a screenplay for Babes in Toyland (that he was to direct, until he got on Walt's Naughty List...) - in all, he seems to have been very busy in that period, just not animating. It seems he did not enjoy animating unless it was a challenge, something new.
