Prod. 2004 - Fantasia (I)  - Seq. 3 (Interim Orchestra Reel #1) & 3.1 (Toccata)

We start, of course, with the "Interim Orchestra" and the introduction of Deems Taylor in this first sequence of Fantasia, Seq. 3. (in the front of the Morgue copy, see yesterday, called Seq. 2). The Scene numbers are called 2-PAC ## - I suspect this is what we used to call "bipack." Dated 10/2/40.

The story continues into J.S. Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in C major, of which above is the first movement. So far no animation, no named animators. Dated 10/3/40.

Both sequences were directed by Sam Armstrong whom we know mostly as background painter. Assistant director long-time Disney editor Lloyd Richardson, layout by Lee Blair and Elmer Plummer.

Coinciding with the release of Fantasia on Bluray, this hopefully will attract more attention (and discussion) throughout the blogosphere than the drafts for The Rescuers.

You're off at a fine start, Hans.

It seems that Sam Armstrong directs some of the Deems Taylor introductions, and I wonder if he directs all of the narrative introductions throughout the film: or is it the fact that Armstrong (who is the director for "Toccata and Fudge"), and that each director of a segment on the film directs the Deems Taylor introductions (e.g.: "The Rite of Spring" - d. Bill Roberts, Paul Satterfield might also direct the Taylor introductions).

I'll assume that Bob Cormack directs the "Fudge" segment in Fantasia - I wonder is Oskar Fischinger's name comes up in the draft? Oh, BTW - Lee Blair on the draft actually did some conceptual designs of the Philadelphia Orchestra and plans and I guess that's why his name was put there.

Most obviously why there isn't any animation credits is because, this is live-action footage and there is no animation at all! I love the scenes of the people playing the instruments in silhouette.

What annoys me the most is the fact that, in later "Fantasia" reissues, is that Deems Taylor's voice is changed and re-recorded by Corey Burton, I've always thought "Why? What's the point of changing his voice?", although I do have a 1991 VHS copy at home - and they show Deems Taylor's original voice in it, but not every single footage of the film!

I have heard that the new Blu-Ray is gorgeous, stunningly beautiful, BUT still does not have the original Deems Taylor voice, alledgedly because they do not have a good enough quality recording, which to me really sounds like a bad excuse...
