Dumbo and other drafts...

...or getting around the limited posts shown when clicking on a label.

Michael Barrier, who unwittingly drove my desire for historical information on animation through the invaluable magazine Funnyworld when I first came in contact with it through my mentor Børge Ring in 1978 (where I also saw my first animation drafts) notes on his great site that "unfortunately, I haven't figured out to get to the earliest installments, but a full page of later posts of the draft comes up when you click on the label "Dumbo.""

If you look to the right column, there you find the "Archives" links.
In the case of Dumbo, the first posts are from April 2010, so pressing that link will show them.

This should give you access to most of the 630 earlier postings. Whenever there are too many posts to be able to be shown within a month, this can cause the last ones to "drop off," which has annoyed me for quite some time. In this Blogger template, I do not know how to add an "Older posts" link, and I tried updating to the newer template, but I had problems running the Javascript necessary for te conversions.

John V. wrote a very helpful comment: "As I eventually discovered, if some of the posts "drop off", then go to the last post displayed (this can only be done, I think, by clicking on the "comments" link, then on the title of the post) and on the right hand side of the page there will be links to the previous few posts. Then you can just continue to follow the posts back by clicking on each individual post title."

Prod. 2725 (2016) - La Pinata (Seq. 3) (I)

First part of Seq. 3 "Folio" which showcases the song Mexico. A LOT of animation by Ollie Johnston, and scenes by Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, Don Patterson, Fred Moore, Hal King and Milt Neil, with effects by Josh Meador.

Directed by Gerri Geronimi, assisted by Rusty Jones, with layouts by Hugh Hennesy and Phillips (it says, but I suspect this is Charles Phillipi). Final draft (with "holes") dated 9/12/1944...

Prod. 2725 (2016) - La Pinata (Seq. 2)

Skipping Seq. 1, which I posted before (I continue my numbering from that), here is Seq. 2 of the "La Pinata" segment, the one that in eight sequences completes the Caballeros draft.

First up is George Rowley's rendition of Mary Blair's Las Posadas sequence, then Breaking the Pinata by Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnston. Directed by Gerri Geronimi, assisted by Rusty Jones, and laid out by Herb Ryman and Hugh Hennesy, this draft dated 9/14/44...

Directed by Bill Roberts, with Mike Holoboff as his assistant director, and laid out by Hugh Hennesy (yes, the cop in Duck Pimples), this sequence from The Three Caballeros, one of the most entertaining, is entirely animated by Milt Kahl, Harvey Toombs and Bill Justice, with effects by Josh Meador and Ed Aardal.

This draft dated 5/20/44 by Dorris [Pugsley]...

Prod. 2016 - The Three Caballeros (I)

Today I decided to finish the Three Caballeros draft. Partly because it is really interesting, and partly because it is somewhat easy for me at this time, when I am busy preparing to go to Annecy.

So here today are Seq. 1 (5/20/44) and 2 (5/27/44).
Directed by Jack Kinney and animated by Hal King and Eric Larson...

Prod. 2721 - Bahia! (II)

Here is the fourth sequence of Bahia, "Os Quindins De Yaya." Animation by John Lounsbery, Fred Moore, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, Les Clark, Ollie Johnston and John Sibley. That makes 5/9th of the Nine Old Men.

Now as to who directed what...
The director of Prod. 2016, The Three Caballeros (and of Prod. 2015, Saludos Amigos) is listed as Norm Ferguson. On the Saludos draft he is actually called Production Supervisor, and he is mentioned as such in the director spot on all the inserts of that film. The sequence directors (or basically shorts directors) on Caballeros are missing on some of the sequences (especially on the one in these postings).
Prod. 2016 - these are the inserts to glue the shorts together to make this a feature: Jack Kinney directed seq. 1 (Opening - into Penguin Picture), 2 (Birds - Insert from Penguin to Gauchito) and the first 5 scenes of seq. 3 (Lead into Baia). Thereafter no info on seq. 3 or seq. 4 (Duck - Parrot Blowing Up).
(Prod 2711, El Gaucho Goofy, dir. Kinney, was part of Saludos)
(Prod 2712, Lake Titicaca, dir. Roberts, was part of Saludos)
Prod. 2713, The Flying Gauchito: Ferguson/Larson.
(Prod. 2714, Pedro, dir. Luske, was part of Saludos)
(Prod 2717, Aquarela Do Brasil, dir. Jaxon, was part of Saludos)
Prod. 2718, The Cold Blooded Penguin: Bill Roberts.
Prod. 2721, Bahia (the subject of these postings) no info.
Prod. 2725 La Pinata: seq. 1, 2, 3 & 8: Gerri Geronimi
- seq. 4, 5, 6 & 7: Norm Ferguson.

Maybe the "missing" director is Fergy, his name being top billed on this picture, and he has directed all the inserts in Saludos.
But this is purely my speculation...
