Prod. 2006 - Dumbo (XX)

72
Seq. 18 "Pink Elephants"
Directed by Norm Ferguson , assistant director Larry Lansburgh, layout Ken O'Connor.
This 2nd draft dated 1/29/41.

Animation of Tim and Dumbo by John Lounsbery, multi-colored elephants by Howard Swift and Hicks Lokey.

I have posted this one before (nearly four years ago), but to keep all files in the same format I re-post it in this newly scanned version.

As I also mentioned in the comments to the earlier posting, this page is the ONLY page in the draft for this sequence, and obviously there is a large part missing, which must be the reason that the folks from the BG Morgue (where this draft originated) added the two lines in the bottom in 1964 during a major BG inventory. So much is missing that I do not dare suggest that the rest was animated by Howard Swift. One would need to look at the scene folders for this info, unless there is another draft page.

[2024 Addition: I am grateful to have received these pages of the FINAL draft for this sequence from Wil Raymakers back in 2016, and now, eight years later, I realized that I had not uploaded them.
No animator information on these, which again makes the point for me that these were done in a hurry!]

Howy Swift can't possibly have done all the rest of it! Van Kaufman must have been involved some way or another, too. And there's more limited animation towards the end, maybe Bob Youngquist? Frank Thomas sounds like a bit too much of a stretch, though.

If you haven't heard already, Maurice Noble was a designer on this sequence.

That's sort of annoying that the rest of the sequence is missing, because I think its one of the best sequences in the film.

Oh well, at least we have some great animation by two underrated animators (Hicks Lokey and Howard Swift)

All in all, I'd assume the overall roster for the "Undrafted abyss" would consist of Howy Swift, Ray Patterson, Harvey Toombs, and Van Kaufman.

We really need more information. I hope somebody has a finalized list somewhere, and is willing to share it sometime!

Though the sequence works beautifully in the film, I've never been much of a fan of it. IT's well constructed, though, beautifully and seamlessly edited and scored.

I wonder if the the rest of the sequence will appear in Mark Mayerson's mosiac, even though we don't know who did the rest. Probably Lokey or Swift.
