Prod. 2519 - The Rescuers (VIII)  - Seq. 005 - Albatros Air Service - Part 1

064065066067068
069070071072073
Directed by Woolie Reitherman, assistant director Jeffrey Patch, layout Don Griffith, secretary Lorraine [Thilman? Davis?].
This FINAL draft dated 2/23/77.

Animation by Andy Gaskill, Dale Oliver, Ollie Johnston, Bob McCrea, Frank Thomas (one scene) and Chuck Harvey.

This is, of course, one of the showcase sequences of the movie, used for publicity, Christmas shows and the like. Most often, though, the second part of this sequence, which we will look at tomorrow. It has often been called "Ollie Johnston's sequence," and he clearly is the directing animator. As such he would probably also have planned the scenes animated by McCrea, Gaskill, Oliver and Harvey. I remember clearly the lectures Frank and Ollie gave, where they used this sequence as example, and showed a good deal of live action footage of birds landing in the most amazingly clumsy ways!

The albatross is quite funny in the film, and he's been a favourite character in the film of mine - they've got BIG wings them!!

When you mentioned before that Frank Thomas planned the sequence with "Bambi and Thumper on Ice" and only did a few scenes, who did the other sequences, because Frank did poses for the other animators on that sequence, didn't he??

Ah, Steven, that would be getting ahead of things! When and if we get to the Bambi draft, all will be revealed.
(I noticed another Bambi draft sold on the web recently, so maybe someone else will beat me to it, but still...)

As can be seen in other sequences, Andy Gaskill, Chuck Harvey and Bob McCrea were in Ollie Johnston's unit. I don't know why that one scene/shot is by Frank Thomas... I guess with the two men being old friends and collaborators it makes sense they might reduce each others wrok load once in a while, even outside of their usual roles in the production of the film.
