Prod. 2179 - Jungle Book (XIV)  - Seq. 012 - Boy Cub Meets Girl Cub and Ending

207 208 209 210 211
212 213 214 215 216
217 218 219
Assistant director Ed Hansen, layout Don Griffith and Basil Davidovich. This FINAL draft typed 9/19/67. Thank you, Lorraine Thilman! Notice the name of the sequence. Someone must have had a giggle over that.

Animated by Ollie Johnston with eleven scenes of Mowgli and the girl by Walt Stanchfield and two scenes of Baloo and Bagheera by Eric Larson. Ollie as supervising animator would have roughly posed out the entire sequence - at least as thumbnails - and then let Walt Stanchfield handle a good deal of them.

As Bo recently pointed out, Ollie was footage king on this production. It's hard to comprehend that today it's already seven years ago that we lost dear Ollie...

This concludes the draft of Prod. 2179, Jungle Book, the sixteenth complete draft on this blog. Remember my "standard disclaimer" which states that drafts were not prepared as historical documents, but as "go-to" documents assigning responsibility during production. As such there can be situations that the person indicated as animator was instead an assistant or other "replacement."

The next thing should not be that long! Whatever that may be...

Thanks Hans for posting the draft! There's been a lot of pleasant surprises from studying these drafts. I had never realised how much Ollie had animated in the film - I calculated each animator's footage along the way, and it seems Ollie animated about 1744 ft. of animation, which is almost 20 minutes of animation! Not to mention, it's even more footage if he's animating two or more characters at the same scene. Astounding.

As usual, I look forward to whatever draft you have in future, although I do have a small request. Have you considered posting the "Fox and the Hound" draft in the near future? I know it might not be everyone's favourites (I don't consider myself a fan of the movie), but I'd be interested to see how much Frank and Ollie, as well as Don Bluth's gang animated compared to the new animators of that generation.

Thanks once again!

Curiously, the draft has Bagheera singing a different line from the one he sings in the film!

Mr. Hartley is absolutely right.

I recalculated Ollies numbers, (this time in excel instead of using a calculator), and now I get 1751 feet even or about 19 and a half miniut.

I hope Mr. Hartley can corect any mistakes I made on the footage of Milt Kahl and Frank Thomas.

Bo.

SOS, Hans!!! I'm an animation teacher and we're learning right now to write barsheets in class. I use your site and click track videos to show my students how to use musical timing to add rhythm, interest, strenght and entertainment to the films, but all the disney cartoons you had at your AFilm LA site are gone! And I can't find'em at your youtube site. Did Disney remove them or something?

Thank you and keep up the invaluable work you're doing for us all animators, just by loving the medium and collecting and posting all this stuff.

Cheers!

I really love these animator drafts.

Do you by chance have the drafts for stuff like "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and the "Winnie the Pooh" films or other short subjects?
