Prod. 2179 - Jungle Book (VI)  - Seq. 005 - Monkeys Kidnap Mowgli

078079080081
082083084
Assistant directors Danny Alguire and Ed Hansen, layout by Don Griffith and Basil Davidovich, this FINAL draft dated 7/10/67.

Animation starts with action scenes (with monkeys, Baloo and Mowgli) by Walt Stanchfield, Hal Ambro and Fred Hellmich, then character scenes by Milt Kahl (Baloo, Bagheera) and John Lounsbery (co-animation of Bagheera).

This relatively short transitional sequence gets us over to King Louie...

No problem!

Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the action scenes in this sequence, but it's fresh and inventive compared to the "Toad Hall" reuses in the following sequence. Milt's animation of Baloo bragging about his fight with the monkeys is excellent, particularly the weight of Baloo. This looks like the only scenes Milt did of Baloo, compared to the rest of the film: we'll have to see.

Sc. 34 is peculiar as it's the only mention of Lounsbery in this sequence, as the final scenes are primarily Milt's work. Perhaps Kahl redrew the keys for ruff Lounsbery animation? Who knows..

Surprised to see Hal Ambro here. And he got passed over for screen credit!

Makes sense that Kahl animated Sc. 33, "Those mangy monkeys carried him off!" - Baloo's expression looks a lot like Tramp's in some of Kahl's "Lady and the Tramp" scenes.

That Lounsbery credit at the end is pretty odd.

Lots of uncredited work by Hal Ambro in here, his monkeys set against Walt Stanchfield scenes with Baloo. And Fred Hellmich seems to be the go to guy for eye-roll shots.
