This part has a bunch of scenes marked "out," but I remember them very well, as they were in the second part of the great Thames TV program of the late 70s about Walt Disney's history and studios. (This show needs to be reissued! It has great footage of interviews with Frank, Ollie and (especially) Milt, Ken Anderson, Woolie etc., and showed the studio during the making of The Rescuers!) Again, a classic!

Great character animation by Ollie - with flying albatross by Bob McCrea and a bit of effects by Ted Kierscey.

Prod. 2519 - The Rescuers (VIII)  - Seq. 005 - Albatros Air Service - Part 1

064065066067068
069070071072073
Directed by Woolie Reitherman, assistant director Jeffrey Patch, layout Don Griffith, secretary Lorraine [Thilman? Davis?].
This FINAL draft dated 2/23/77.

Animation by Andy Gaskill, Dale Oliver, Ollie Johnston, Bob McCrea, Frank Thomas (one scene) and Chuck Harvey.

This is, of course, one of the showcase sequences of the movie, used for publicity, Christmas shows and the like. Most often, though, the second part of this sequence, which we will look at tomorrow. It has often been called "Ollie Johnston's sequence," and he clearly is the directing animator. As such he would probably also have planned the scenes animated by McCrea, Gaskill, Oliver and Harvey. I remember clearly the lectures Frank and Ollie gave, where they used this sequence as example, and showed a good deal of live action footage of birds landing in the most amazingly clumsy ways!

Prod. 2519 - The Rescuers (VII)  - Seq. 3.1 - The Pawn Shop - Part 2 - Ride to the Airport

059060061062063
Continued...
These pages add Dick Lucas for the effect shots of the car and Milt's long-time assistant Stan Green for Medusa in that car.

Interesting to see that a whole slew of scenes have been cut from the film. Most likely the type of transitional footage that naturally finds its way to the cutting room floor...

Prod. 2519 - The Rescuers (VI)  - Seq. 3.1 - The Pawn Shop - Part 1

047048049050051052
053054055056057058
Directed by John Lounsbery and Art Stevens, assistant director Rick Rich, layout by Joe Hale.
This FINAL draft of 3/18/77.

We find animation by Dale Baer, Tad Stones (second sighting), Gary Goldman, Don Bluth (all sharing scenes with Bernard and Bianca) and Milt Kahl animating his marvelous Madam Medusa.

It is interesting to see Milt share his Medusa scenes with Dale Baer and Don Bluth. Obviously Milt planned these - but how much was done by whom?
