Prod. 2179 - Jungle Book (II)  - Seq. 001 - Opening

003 004 005 006 007 008
009 010 011 012 013 014
015 016 017 018
Directed by Woolie Reitherman, assistant director Danny Alguire, layout by Don Griffith and Basil Davidovich. This FINAL draft written 9/18/67 by Lorraine Thilman. Animation by Hal King (the main bulk of the sequence, the scenes with the wolves and the baby), Ollie Johnston (character scenes with Bagheera), John Ewing (one scene with panther and basket) and Fred Hellmich (one scene with basket), while John Ewing, Dick Lucas and Walt Stanchfield are credited for reuse of Milt Kahl's scenes from Seq. 004.

So this is basically Hal King and Ollie Johnston's sequence. But the credits immediately shows a "trap" of the drafts: animators credited for re-using the work of others. Luckily the re-used scenes are mentioned, which makes this clear. It also shows that Seq. 004 was animated before this sequence.

So, Ollie gets the "acting" shots of Bagheera, while the shots where he's just walking around are given to Dick Lucas, John Ewing, and Walt Stanchfield.

The wolf family and Mowgli are animated by Hal King (until Mowgli leaves the wolves), but, curiously enough, the entire wolf council sequence, including Bagheera, is animated by Eric Cleworth.

The walking-and-talking(and-riding) scenes of Mowgli and Bagheera are animated by the Bagheera animators from before.

Of the second-stringer animators, Walt Stanchfield gets a bit more to do, getting some reaction shots of Bagheera at the beginning and substantial dialogue later on. All the same, a couple of films later, he'd be busted back down to assistant animator.

A few oddities. Sc.8 is credited to Fred Hellmich, but there's no animation, i.e. movement. I guess *someone* had to draw the basket so it could be painted onto a cel.

Sc.24 has no animator credited, but it's described as "similar to Sc.17" so I guess they were planning to reuse Ollie's animation.

Also interesting to note is that a few wolf scenes haven't been fully planned out yet, for example Sc.30, with the note "We have a "Dalmatian" action which might be used", but Hal King's name is already on them.

Finally, it's amusing to note that the draft calls the wolf cubs "puppies" more often than not!
